WORLDS BIGGEST DECORATIVE POND COVER

At a whopping 28m2 I believe this to be the worlds biggest decorative pond cover and the pond cover was the biggest project we’ve completed

In spring of 2016, I took on our biggest project to date. A 6.4 x 4.4m pond cover with a 3m spiderweb. A large black widow sculpture on it and a koi fish detail. At first I wasn’t sure if it would even be possible. We talked through the details with the customer and I knew that it would be difficult. Although I knew we could do it and I believed making the worlds biggest decorative pond cover would be an interesting job.

My workshop is a humble space and the pond covers are made on the floor of the workshop. I would normally make a pond cover all together in one piece. Then cut it up into sections at the very end. This ensures that the pieces fit together like a puzzle. Welding creates movement in the steel, which can slightly change its shape. This is called warping or distortion. Over 4m of welding at small spaced intervals will move the steel, so it needs to be clamped and tack welded in place to stop as much of this movement as possible. This called for new and stronger equipment to deal with the size and weight of the pond cover. also a heightened sense of safety for ourselves. This was an interesting challenge to say the least.

I’m pleased to say that even though the cover took longer than I’d hoped it would take. I’m over the moon with the finished piece and so were the customers. They now have a safe space for their beautiful child to play. And the comfort of knowing that their koi are safe from the local herons and other possible predators.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Kind regards

Shaun
