Custom Japanese entrance gate

A while back the owner of Roger Gracie Acadamy Buckinghamshire contacted me and said that one of the guys at the Acadamy had showed him my work. He wanted to know if I would like to design something unique for the rear entrance of the property. His preferred influence was Japanese Samurai. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has its roots in Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. I trained with Kev for a while before I had children. Hes an incredible man that does a huge amount for the community so I wanted to do the best job that I could.

Very seldom do my designs pop into my head quickly. I generally have to sit on the idea for some time which is why my waiting time can be a bit sporadic and unreliable. I am a perfectionist, I make these design for myself before they go to anyone so I have to be happy with them. As I’d never made double gates before. Let alone with a Japanese style so I was very nervous. I started by making the Samurai mask. I consulted with Kev and we found a design that would be transferred nicely to metal. I then used various techniques to create the mask.

Once the Samurai mask was complete, I was left scratching my head. How could I complete this Japanese entrance gate? I sat thinking about this for quite a while. Then one day I decided to have a play on the drawing program I have. I found this to be very helpful. I was able to try different ideas out on the computer. This gave me ideas I would never had unless I used a drawing program.

After being given the go ahead. I started fabrication of the gate itself, making the frame and then adding the rings. Then I added the Samurai mask and created the Roger Gracie Logo. Finally adding in the horizontal and vertical bars. To finish the gate off I forged two half Sai’s (martial arts weapon) to be used as drop bolts.

To finish off the Japanese Entrance Gate it was sent for powder coating and then installed on site.
